How toxic is botox: 2 units of botulinum toxin kills one 20 gram mouse

Botulinum toxin is not measured in quantities as grams or in milliliters but in mortality (lethal dose: LD50).

The reason why the poison is not stated in grams is because the toxin is a biological material and varies in strength from time to time. So 2 grams of poison divided into 2 piles of 1 gram each can in principle contain different strengths.

The poison is therefore stated in units – or rather: “mouse units”, because mice are the experimental animals on which mortality (LD50) is measured.

A mouse unit equals the amount of venom that can kill a single mouse. – Or rather: a Swiss female mouse of 20 grams.

Here are some technical details about the lethal dose:

When measuring the strength of the poison, one works with a concept called LD50. LD stands for Lethal Dose (lethal dose), 50 accounts for 50% of the subjects who die from the poison.

Since not all mice die from the same amount of venom, it cannot be said that a certain dose kills all mice of the same size. It has been measured that a 20 gram mouse can die from 7.3 picograms of botulinum toxin, but not all mice die from 7.3 picograms of venom.

7.3 picograms – how small an amount it is:


A picogram one trillionth (in English: trillionth) of a gram. One trillion is one million millions (or 1,000 billion).

So one out of 1000 billion is a “pico”!

Mouse units – see the evidence:

The dosage is specified in units (mouse units or mouse units, because 1 unit / unit is the amount needed to kill 1 mouse.

1 UNIT can kill 1 mouse of 20 grams.

This is explained on the NCBI website. NCBI (“National Center for Biotechnology Information”) is a library of medicine – assembled on a US website. It says: “One unit of botulinum toxin corresponds to the calculated median intraperitoneal lethal dose (LD 50 ) in female Swiss-Webster mice”. On Allergan’s product information on Botox, it is also mentioned on the first page that 1 unit is the mortality of 1 mouse (LD50): “One unit (U) of BOTOX® corresponds to the calculated median intraperitoneal lethal dose (LD50) in mice, performed in a mouse potency assay ”. See here:

Ipsen’s product information for Dysport (which is the same as Azzalure) on page 20 also states: “One unit of DYSPORT® corresponds to the calculated median lethal intraperitoneal dose (LD50) in mice.”

A typical cosmetic injection with botulinum toxin on the face is between 25-50 units. A migraine treatment is typically 155-195 units and doctors provides up to 300 units for treatment for spasticity. Then you can figure out for yourself how many mice the treatments can kill.

The lethal dose for humans

It is unknown how many units of botulinum toxin are needed to kill a human, but it is estimated that 3000 units are needed:

As they write, it is estimated that the lethal dose is 3000 units. For good reasons the mortality in humans is not researched.

Furthermore, they write that the tolerance to the toxin varies from species to species. – Therefore, the results from animal experiments can not be transferred to humans without further ado.

Experiments have been performed on mice, rats and monkeys. The rodents have been destroyed after 3 days, so the long-term side effects on mice and rats are not actually known. In monkey experiments with repeated injections, deaths have been seen after months.

It only takes 4 kg of botulinum toxin to wipe out all of humanity!

More than 700 deaths after botulinum toxin treatments in the United States

It is important to point out that to date there are over 700 reports of deaths after botulinum toxin treatments – in the US alone !!!!! You can look this up in the FDA’s database and check for it. Several deaths have been seen in humans at far lower doses than 3000 units.

Of course, there are also deaths in Europe, but in the EU’s database (European database of suspected adverse drug reaction reports) one can not search for specific botox products, nor does it show how many deaths there have been.
